The Coach was brought in to replace Rudi Garcia had held his first training session this afternoon.

He will sleep at the Trigoria training ground tonight and hold a Press conference on Saturday, but spoke to Roma TV.

“I compliment Roma, as I see that things have improved since I was last here,” said the former Zenit tactician.

“It was a wonderful sensation being back here, as I spent so many precious years at Roma and it was an emotional moment. I met up with people who cared for me at Trigoria and that relaxed me.

“My love for Roma has never passed. It was a long and intense period, but above all you cannot do anything banal here. In my first period at Roma I put a lot of sentiment into my work. My children live in Rome and consequently I never really left Roma.

“Roma are within me and I am back now, so I am happy.”

There are still some players who were under Spalletti, but many are meeting him for the first time after Garcia’s dismissal.

“I found the lads to be attentive and that was inevitable. They put a lot of intensity into the training session and I had a positive response.

“We need to work on the psychological aspect, as if we start going after physical situations then we’ll lose sight of our future. We have very little time to bring home results straight away.

“In football it’s always an issue of the mind. I need to press the right buttons so the players realise what is the right path. They are all fine physically, I don’t want anyone to talk about a physical problem here, as I saw them in good shape.”

This was a sideswipe at Garcia, who had complained the fitness staff appointed by the club left his team dropping off in intensity towards the end of games.

Spalletti’s debut will be against bottom of the table Verona on Sunday afternoon.

“It is fundamental for us and Serie A is of such a strong level now that every game is difficult. On Sunday I want to see what I saw today in training and it’ll be a pleasure to watch the Roma game from that bench.

“We need our fans, their support will be fundamental and they know that.”
