Naturally, the Rossoneri are the overwhelming favourites to progress, but Alessandria have already caused more than a few upsets along the way.

Hailing from Lega Pro – the new name for Serie C, Italy’s third division – they started the tournament in the First Round on August 2.

They’ve eliminated AltoVicentino, Pro Vercelli, Juve Stabia, Palermo, Genoa and Spezia – many of them away from home.

Alessandria are the first team from the third division to reach the semi-finals since Bari in 1984.

As there wouldn’t be enough room at their own stadium to play a semi-final there, Alessandria are borrowing Torino’s Stadio Olimpico and transporting much of the town here to cheer on its heroes.

The pressure is all on Milan, but Sinisa Mihajlovic has to balance this test with Sunday night’s Derby della Madonnina with Inter, so some players are rested.

It gives Balotelli his first start in four months, while Kevin-Prince Boateng, Jose Mauri and Luiz Adriano – who returned from an aborted move to Jiangsu Suning – also get their chance.

The Coppa Italia is very important to Milan, as they haven’t won this trophy for 13 years, but more importantly victory would secure a place in the Europa League next season.
