“In order to fight for the Scudetto we’d need more results, luck, joy and the awareness we are strong,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It is above all a psychological problem. We don’t believe in ourselves enough.

“You can train or perfect your skills, but the main thing that makes the difference for a striker is being calm. I always think positive.

“Against Empoli, while I was running with the ball at my feet towards the goalkeeper, I never feared that I could miss. I concentrated only on the ball and on the defender I had to keep behind me. I decided where to shoot and that was it.

“I always see the net as being huge. It looks smaller on TV because the perspective is different. It’d be better to have six or seven chances per game, but this is football too. I learned strikers have to be the first defenders.

“I did speak to Sinisa Mihajlovic about the lack of service. At the start of the season it was really tough, as I had only one or two chances per game.

“We found a few solutions in training. Since moving to 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1, the situation has improved.”

Does Bacca prefer to be partnered by M’Baye Niang or Luiz Adriano?

“They are very different forwards. Luiz Adriano has more technique and we dialogue well with the ball. Niang is more dynamic and can move easily down the right or left. I am happy that Niang stayed with us.”

Milan are in the Coppa Italia semi-final, having beaten Alessandria 1-0 in the first leg, and that is another potential avenue towards Europe.

“I really missed playing in Europe. I could’ve taken part in the Champions League with Sevilla this season, but Milan have a great project.

“I really don’t see myself being out of Europe for a second year running. This is why I and Milan are working so hard. We absolutely must qualify for European competition.”
