The striker completed his transfer from Torino on deadline day, a return to one of his many former clubs.

“I am very happy to be back, as I have wonderful memories of this club and these fans,” Quagliarella told the official Samp website.

“The chance arrived and there are many people here I already knew, so that will help me to settle in. I made the big leap forward in my career wearing this shirt and remember many great moments, stupendous goals.

“I find Antonio Cassano again and I’m very happy, as I consider him an extraordinary player, well above the average.

“Montella has been my idol since I was a child, so being coached by him will be wonderful. In recent years there were a few talks, but nothing concrete.”

Quagliarella was essentially pushed out of Torino after the fans were infuriated by his refusal to celebrate a goal against hometown club Napoli.

“I didn’t know that I was on the market, to be honest. I had made up with the fans and was not afraid to shoulder the responsibility, but I found myself dropped and I didn’t know why.

“Would I celebrate if I scored against Torino? No.”
