Eusebio Di Francesco insists “nobody could’ve complained if it had ended 1-1” after Sassuolo’s 2-0 defeat to Roma.

Domenico Berardi blasted a late penalty over the bar when it was 1-0, then Stephan El Shaarawy completed the rout.

“It can happen. Domenico is our penalty taker, he’s always done very well, so it can happen that one goes wrong,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium.

“It’s a pity because we did put Roma under a lot of pressure and created chances. Roma worked as a team unit and didn’t give us many reference points, as there wasn’t a centre-forward, but in the first half we didn’t do well at holding our lines, so got stretched out.

“I changed some things after the break, putting Acerbi on Salah, and we pressured them much better to pin them back into their own half.

“We could’ve made more of our scoring opportunities. It’s a real shame, especially to lose 2-0 in the circumstances. Nobody could’ve complained if this had ended 1-1.

Sassuolo are not Real Madrid, we cannot be expected to dominate a match for 90 minutes. We need to get better at approaching games with the right relaxed attitude.”
