“Both teams have a lot of quality and some very good players, so I agree with Sousa that this could be a Champions League tie,” said Pochettino in a Press conference.

“What we need to work towards is playing in the Champions League next year and Fiorentina are in a similar position. We could even face them in that tournament next year, who knows?”

The Spurs manager dismissed suggestions he could rest players for Europe after leaping into second place in the Premier League.

“It is important for us. I can understand in England because of our position in the table people think it’s an important opportunity to fight for the Premier League title, but for me when you are a big club you have to fight in every competition and every game.

“My priority is always the next game, not too much about the future, that is how we live and the squad feels.

“For me the most important game is tomorrow and the Premier League can wait. We are Tottenham, we must try to win every competition and every game.”

There was bad news for the London club, as goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris was ruled out by a shoulder injury.
