Marek Hamsik insists Napoli are just suffering from “bad luck” after their Europa League exit to Villarreal.

The 1-0 loss in the first leg was from a late Denis Suarez free kick, while this evening the hosts dominated despite a 1-1 draw – the equaliser a misplaced cross.

“We have so much bad luck at the moment. We put in a good performance, but after their equaliser we were unable to score two against such a tough defensive side as Villarreal,” Hamsik told Sky Sport Italia.

“This defeat burns because our team wanted to progress and we gave our all. From tomorrow we have to focus on Serie A.

“We leave the Europa League with our heads held high.”

Napoli had seemed unstoppable in the tournament, keeping a 100 per cent record in the group stage by scoring 22 goals and conceding only three.

Yet now they are out of the Europa League and Coppa Italia, while their winless streak in all competition stretches to four games.

“At the moment it’s just bad luck and we played against great teams lately.”
