Manchester City held PSG to a thrilling 2-2 draw, but Wolfsburg caused a huge upset by beating Real Madrid 2-0 in their debut Champions League quarter-final.

The first legs were played this evening and the returns will be next Tuesday.

It was a dramatic start in Paris, as David Luiz hauled down Sergio Aguero for a booking within 15 seconds and will be suspended for the second leg. Blaise Matuidi then went under an Eliaquim Mangala challenge from behind, but the referee waved away furious penalty appeals.

The official did award a spot-kick moments later, although Luiz seemed to be looking for contact with Bacary Sagna and ran the real risk of a second yellow card for simulation. Zlatan Ibrahimovic stepped up and saw his penalty well saved by Joe Hart, who was returning from injury.

Ibra also blasted over following a Nicolas Otamendi error and PSG were made to pay when Kevin De Bruyne’s angled drive beat Kevin Trapp after a rapid counter.

However, Fernando was caught napping on a back-pass with a shocking error and Ibrahimovic prodded the ball into an empty net from the edge of the box.

Matuidi wasted a golden opportunity to put PSG 2-1 up before half-time, horribly misplacing his pass with Edinson Cavani waiting to tap in. Matuidi completed his nightmare game with a booking, so he too will be suspended for the second leg.

It remained a very open game, but Hart could only parry a Cavani header from a corner and Adrien Rabiot turned in the rebound.

Ibrahimovic was unlucky not to make it 3-1 when his header thumped the crossbar, but Manchester City scored a bizarre goal when Serge Aurier at full stretch only scuffed his interception and Fernandinho pounced with a deflected finish.

With two away goals and PSG missing two key players through suspension at the Etihad, Manchester City will feel they are in a good position to reach the semi-final.

Over in Germany, Wolfsburg caused a huge upset with their first ever Champions League quarter-final, crushing Real Madrid’s Galacticos 2-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had given Real Madrid the lead after two minutes, but he was flagged offside.

It was Wolfsburg who took a shock lead when Casemiro brought down Andre Schurrle and Ricardo Rodriguez converted the penalty. That was the first goal Keylor Navas had conceded in this edition of the Champions League after 738 minutes of football.

Real Madrid were shaken and went 2-0 down to a well-worked move, finalised by Arnold’s side-foot finish from six yards on a Schurrle assist.

Navas was decisive on Schurrle, while Julian Draxler was running the show and Karim Benzema’s injury made matters even worse for Zinedine Zidane’s men.

Schurrle threatened a third by firing over on the counter and Benaglio smothered a Cristiano Ronaldo effort, but in the final minute a fingertip Navas save prevented Max Kruse making it 3-0.
