The former Primavera youth team tactician made an ideal debut with their 3-0 victory away to Palermo after Stefano Pioli’s dismissal.

“As I said in the Press conference, the lads were really eager to work,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We played very well today and were fortunate to find situations we had tested out in training. This is a squad with quality and one that belongs higher up the table.

“I made it clear my objective and ambition is to be the Lazio Coach next season too, but we’ll see what happens and how results go.

“I had the opportunity this week to spend almost my whole time with the lads in the training retreat. I tried to pick the best available players in their current form.

“Santiago Gentiletti hadn’t started for four months, while Eddy Onazi had been out for a long time and he played a fantastic game.”

Despite the disastrous campaign, Lazio are just four points off sixth-placed Milan.

“Football is strange and anything can happen. After all, I won a Scudetto with Lazio when I was nine points off the top.”

Simone is the younger brother of ex-Milan Coach Pippo Inzaghi, so did they discuss his debut match in Serie A?

“I speak to Pippo every day anyway, but yes we did chat about the game beforehand. I always thought we’d be players, maybe not both in Serie A, but our passion for the sport has taken us on to become Coaches.

“We already faced off as Coaches at Primavera level and now we hope to meet in Serie A too.”
