Carli: ‘Tonelli will leave Empoli’

Sporting director Marcello Carli admits this will be Lorenzo Tonelli’s “last year at Empoli”.

The defender has been linked with most of Serie A’s leading lights, but Lazio are believed to be in pole position.

“I haven’t heard from [Lazio sporting director Igli] Tare or I’d have said,” Carli insisted on Radio Sei.

“I have a good relationship with him though. We talked with [Roma’s Walter] Sabatini last January but that’s not a secret.

“In any case, I think this will be Tonelli’s last year at Empoli. It’s better for us and the player to take different paths.”

Sabatini will step down as the Giallorossi’s sporting director after this season, could Carli make the move south?

“I go to Rome twice a year, and I’d like to go more because it’s a beautiful city.

“Right now there’s nothing, we’ve talked a lot but like I said, right now we don’t want to talk about the transfer market, we want to focus on the pitch.”
