In Manchester, Manuel Pellegrini opted to leave Yaya Toure on the bench, with the Ivorian out of contract in the summer.

The French champions started on the front-foot, and Joe Hart had to be sharp to tip a Zlatan Ibrahimovic free-kick over the bar.

However, after that moment it was all City, and the English side should have taken the lead with half an hour played.

Sergio Aguero surged into the box and was chopped down by PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who received a yellow card.

The Argentinian stepped-up to take the spot-kick, but put his shot wide of Trapp’s post to keep the score at 0-0.

In the second half, Ibrahimovic again tested Hart with a free-kick, but the England number one was alert to push away his low drive.

It was a cagey affair, with neither side really able to test the other until De Bruyne’s intervention.

Fernando found the Belgian on the edge of the box, and he took a touch before curling a right-footed shot past Trapp and into the back of the net to book his side’s place in the semi-finals.

Real Madrid had a mountain to climb, but Cristiano Ronaldo made short work of reducing the deficit.

The Portuguese scored twice in 90 seconds to leave the tie poised at 2-2 after just 16 minutes.

While the German visitors had their chances after that, Ronaldo completed his hat-trick on 77 minutes to complete a sensational comeback for Zinedine Zidane’s men.
