The 22-year-old centre-forward had been on the verge of a transfer to Inter in January, but he ended up on loan at Sao Paulo instead.

“Roma know Calleri very well and have been tracking him for some time,” intermediary Fabio Amicucci told Radio Centro Suono Sport.

“In January he could’ve joined Inter, but there were some problems. There’s nothing concrete with Roma right now, but I met (Giallorossi director Walter) Sabatini several times in the past and there could be a revival.

“Calleri has similar qualities to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as he is very powerful physically and has a real eye for goal. Calleri will get a European passport soon and could therefore be an option for Roma and other Italian clubs.

“Jonathan would like to play in Italy, as he favours Serie A above other leagues. The price-tag is around €20m. He is a complete player who has all the characteristics needed to adapt to Luciano Spalletti’s football. He is much more precise in front of goal than Edin Dzeko.”

The reason the Inter move collapsed was due to a complicated third party ownership issue.

“Stellar are the investment fund who own the player. They paid €12m and loaned him out to Sao Paulo until June, but I think this summer he will leave South America.”
