The Nerazzurri recovered from Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Genoa, but had to fight back from an early Cyril Thereau volley and depend on Samir Handanovic in stoppages.

“If you go back to what I said on Wednesday, it’s exactly the same issue. We should’ve finished it off earlier, instead we wasted chances and risked at the end, but it was a fine performance,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“We had to win in order to keep a faint glimmer of hope alive, because strange things happen in football. Are there regrets? Let’s wait for that. People are trying to make out we’ve had a disastrous season, but that is not the case.

Roma are having an extraordinary run, losing just once since Luciano Spalletti took over, and probably deserve to be in third place. We have to hope Napoli win against them on Monday.”

Stevan Jovetic hadn’t scored in Serie A since the last time Inter faced Udinese on December 12, but bagged a brace this evening.

“Not only did he score two goals, but he can do a lot more and he knows that. Tonight everyone did well, we played a really good game.

“We signed Eder because we hoped he’d score goals, but unfortunately until now he had been putting in good performances without any luck. I’m glad he got his first goal and hopefully can now play with less pressure.”

Chinese investors from the Suning Commerce Group were in the stands after a meeting to buy 20 per cent of the club, so could this change Mancini’s future?

“There is absolutely no problem as far as I am concerned. If there is one thing for certain it’s that Inter and its fans, regardless of who is President or Coach, will continue.

“It’s you in the media who are stirring up controversy, but we are relaxed and do our work.”
