Totti has made it clear he wants to continue playing and scored three goals in his last three Serie A games, coming off the bench late on.

“I said five years ago that Totti is the sun that sets on the rooftops of Rome, because those who live here know it stays and stays. It’s still valid, the light has not gone out,” Sabatini told Mediaset Premium.

“The issue around Totti is a very simple question. ‘Do you want to end at the top or when you can’t take it anymore?’

“He thinks he can continue playing and it’s almost the enthusiasm of an adolescent.”

Coach Luciano Spalletti has faced most of the criticism from fans and media for keeping Totti on the bench.

“Spalletti did his work. When he thought it right, he played Francesco and with excellent results too. Spalletti had the honesty to put him on the pitch when it was right, not when the Press told him to.

“Spalletti is outside of any controversy. He did his job in this situation and he did it well.”
