Aurelio De Laurentiis and Maurizio Sarri held a joint Press conference, announcing Napoli have bought Lorenzo Tonelli.

The Partenopei beat Frosinone 4-0 to secure second place and automatic entry into the Champions League group phase.

“What more can I say after this return to the Champions League,” said President De Laurentiis.

“I thank Sarri, who accompanied along this journey with his ardour. I also thank (director Cristiano) Giuntoli, who I knew had what it takes and would be a revelation.

“Sarri doesn’t know this yet, but Napoli have formalised the first signing and it is Tonelli. We’ll sign the paperwork on Monday.

“It was a gesture of good faith, because even if we had suffered the pain of not finishing in the top two, we would’ve reinforced the squad anyway.

“We’ll reinforce it in a calm, but effective, manner to be competitive in Europe. That means you have to play all 19 of them!”

It had been reported there was a deal in place for Empoli defender Tonelli, worth €9.5m plus a further €2m in bonuses.

Sarri also briefly took the microphone during the party atmosphere.

“I thank everyone, you welcomed me in such a wonderful way. I also thank the fans, because Napoli might be second in the table, but our supporters are the champions of Italy.”
