The Italian international has been suffering with a persistent groin injury, and was following a conservative treatment plan in order to be fit for Euro 2016.

However, that option failed and the midfielder was sent for an operation in Doha, which his club have now confirmed was successful.

“As previously announced by the Club, Marco Verratti underwent surgery on Monday 16 May, at the Aspetar Hospital in Doha,” a statement on PSG’s official website read.

“Operated on by the Sport Groin Pain Center and Doctors Ulrike Muschaweck, Gilles Reboul and Zarko Vuckovic, the operation was a success.

“Paris Saint-Germain wishes Marco a speedy recovery and looks forward to seeing him back to his best for both club and country.”

Verratti will still be unavailable for this summer's European Championships, meaning Italy will be without two of their key midfielders in Verratti and Claudio Marchisio.
