Pirlo, Giovinco: 'We spoke to Conte'
Andrea Pirlo and Sebastian Giovinco’s agent reveal they could still be in Italy’s Euro 2016 squad.
The pair were not included in the recent training camp that is currently taking place at Coverciano, suggesting they won’t make the cut for Antonio Conte’s Azzurri.
“Conte hasn’t given the definitive list yet,” New York City FC midfielder Pirlo told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Those who are still playing competitive games are not in the training camp. Giovinco and I have spoken to Conte and we made some decisions together.
“Am I out of the squad for Euro 2016? It’s possible. We know what we said to each other. I prefer not to add anything more.
“It seems normal to me that Major League Soccer doesn’t have the same reputation as a European League, but evaluations still have to be made.”
Pirlo is hinting that, considering injuries to Marco Verratti and Claudio Marchisio, Conte will evaluate the players in the training camp before deciding whether to call him.
“When someone makes the decision to come to the USA, he knows what he’s getting into,” continued Pirlo.
“These are issues I reflected on and I knew what the risks were. If you play in Belgium or another League will less quality, you still have the opportunity to play in the Champions League or Europa League.
“Do I have regrets? Absolutely not. In fact, it has been a pleasure to stay with exceptional lads like my current teammates, help them to grow in training and give advice during games.
“Now the results are starting to appear too. Who would I like to bring to New York? Alessandro Matri and he’s coming to visit me soon.”
Meanwhile, Giovinco’s agent also commented on the Italy situation and noted the door was still open for the Toronto FC hitman.
“Why didn’t Conte call Giovinco? I think we need to wait, because he hasn’t called up the Juventus players who are involved in the Coppa Italia Final either,” Andrea D’Amico told Red Card in Toronto.
“Maybe he’ll call Sebastian later on. There’d be no reason to call him now, as Sebastian is playing MLS games with Toronto and is very important for the team.
“Nothing is certain yet and we need to wait, as Conte could call later on.”
