The 25-year-old is currently on loan from Liverpool to Milan, where many believe he will stay another year. Formerly an Azzurri star but now not even included in the Euro 2016 preliminary squad, Balo's career has witnessed a dramatic downward spiral over the last two years.
While the idea of starting afresh from a smaller club could be a viable option, it seems improbable the likes of Crotone would be able to cover his salary.
“If he accepts to join us, I'll give him the captain's armband,” said President Raffaele Vrenna, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport. “The problem is Liverpool's salary.”
