Domenico Criscito “did not expect” to be called for Euro 2016. “Antonio Conte has already made his decisions.”

The Zenit St Petersburg defender was part of the training camp last week, but did not make the 30-man preliminary squad.

“I did not expect to be called up for Euro 2016,” confessed Criscito at a sponsorship event.

“In these two years with Conte on the bench I’ve only been called a couple of times.

“Even if I play for a big club in an important tournament and featured in the Champions League, the Coach has already made his decisions and I have to respect that.

“I will continue to give 100 per cent and hope one day to be back in the Italy squad. I have another two years on my contract with Zenit and at the moment have no intention of leaving.

“It’s a shame we won’t be in the Champions League, but we hope to have a strong Europa League run.

“I’d like for Zenit to sign some other Italians, as I feel a bit lonely.”

He will at least be able to speak Italian with new Coach Mircea Lucescu, who had a strong Serie A career.
