Italy achieved a comfortable win over Scotland, but will be concerned with their penetration in the final third, and with the finishing of certain players. Gaby McKay rates Antonio Conte’s men.

Gianluigi Buffon – 5

With Scotland failing to muster a single shot on target, the great man had nothing to do. Could have watched the match from a deckchair.

Spectator.

Andrea Barzagli – 5

Like Buffon, had very little to do but was solid when called-upon and tidy in possession. Won't have had many easier nights than this. Relaxed.

Leonardo Bonucci – 6

Found Antonio Candreva with a number of raking passes, and his ability to create from the back will be important in France. An easy night on the defensive side. Classy.

Giorgio Chiellini – 5

Made a couple of solid tackles on Matt Phillips but, like his defensive colleagues, was largely untroubled. Solid.

Antonio Candreva – 5.5

Italy's main attacking outlet, but too often failed to provide an end product. Blazed two decent opportunities over the bar, and failed to pick out Pelle' on numerous occasions when released down the right. Got into the right positions, but will have to be more clinical in France. Frustrating.

Alessandro Florenzi – 6.5

Playing in his natural role in central midfield, the Roma man was composed, even if his shooting left a lot to be desired. Antonio Conte's Mr Versatile, there will be no concerns if he's deployed in the middle at Euro 2016. Reliable.

Daniele De Rossi – 6

A chance to prove his fitness more than anything else, and De Rossi acquitted himself well. Not a spectacular performance, but he kept the ball moving in the centre, and his experience will be invaluable at the European Championship. Certain.

Emmanuele Giaccherini – 5

We all know he's going to go to France, so there's little point complaining about it, but Giaccherini is not the man to carry the Azzurri to glory. Missed three good chances in the first half. The first was a stunning save by Scotland 'keeper David Marshall, and the third was a difficult volley, but in between he blazed an easy opportunity over the bar. Wayward.

Matteo Darmian – 5.5

Not at his best on the left, the Manchester United full-back’s attacking contribution was therefore stunted. Was nevertheless reliable defensively, as evidenced by the quiet display of Ikechi Anya. Decent.

Graziano Pelle’ – 7.5

He may not be Christian Vieri or Luca Toni. He may not even be Alberto Gilardino. He is, however, the best out-and-out striker available to the Azzurri at the moment, and he came up with a lovely finish for the winning goal. Clinical.

Eder – 5

Pre-match rumours suggested this was the Brazilian-born forward’s last chance to stake his claim for a place at Euro 2016. On this display, he’ll be staying at home. Set-up the only goal, though he had actually intercepted a through-ball to Giaccherini before doing so, and was lucky not to be booked for a first half dive. Ineffective

Lorenzo Insigne – 5.5

Given the last half hour in place of Eder, and offered at least as much as the Inter forward. Not his best game, but if Conte doesn’t take him to France it’ll be a travesty. Tantalising.

Federico Bernardeschi – 6

An encouraging display from the Fiorentina forward, who caused the Scottish defence problems with his more direct approach. Got down the right of the Scotland defence repeatedly, though often moved too soon and was caught offside – perhaps a function of the methodical build-up, rather than his timing. Promising.

Marco Parolo – 5.5

Replaced his Lazio teammate Antonio Candreva, and was less adventurous down the right. Will have been disappointed by his positioning for Scotland’s only shot. Shaky.

Jorginho – 5.5

Finally given an opportunity to make a proper international debut, after his cameo against Spain, the Napoli man didn’t have a lot to do. Customarily reliable in possession, he won’t disappoint if he makes the cut for the Euros. Efficient.

Simone Zaza – 5

Offered his usual endeavour and physical presence, but very little fell for him. Not the best showcase for him. Industrious.

Giacomo Bonaventura – 4

Given 10 minutes at the end of a dead game. Not much else to say really. Nebulous.
