Luciano Spalletti allegedly convinced President James Pallotta to keep Walter Sabatini at Roma, whilst requesting Juan Iturbe.

The sporting director was believed to have one foot out of the door already, with rumours suggesting that he was in talks with Bologna for a new job.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, however, Sabatini's future is still with the Giallorossi, largely thanks to Spalletti.

The Lupi Coach apparently spoke with Pallotta and convinced him to retain the sporting director, believing the latter would be more effective than the transfer team envisioned by the President. He then had a private meeting with Sabatini, held last Tuesday, in which the two had an extensive discussion on the transfer strategy.

While Spalletti is aware that a few players will have to be sold for Roma to balance the books, he had some specific requests.

These included keeping Arsenal's goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and bringing back Iturbe from his Bournemouth loan.

Spalletti is apparently keen to test out the Paraguayan, who did not flourish under previous Coach Rudi Garcia.
