“Why should I go? In life, you have to make decisions, rightly or wrongly,” he told ABC.

“I hesitated a lot because what I found in Sevilla, I’d rarely seen elsewhere. Now, a new challenge has appeared and I’ll give everything.

“I still find talking about Sevilla in the past tense difficult because what I experienced was incredible.

“When I arrived two summers ago, I was at a difficult time [in my career] because I’d been left out of [Argentina’s 2014] World Cup squad.

“I wasn’t counted on at Valencia and it seemed that everything was wrong. Then came Sevilla, and I’ll be eternally grateful for what they did for me.

“I heard the fans chanting my name, and it filled me with pride and created doubts, but I had to make a decision.

“[On his best memory at Sevilla], it wasn’t [the finals in] Basel and Warsaw, it was when I first arrived.

“After a few training sessions and meeting the squad, I knew I had signed for a team of champions.

“Since we beat Juventus [in the Champions League], I told [sporting director] Monchi, ‘this year we’ll will win the Europa League again and reach the final of the Copa del Rey.’

“The fans always joined in, regardless of whoever we faced. [Monchi] is spectacular, and I’ll always be thankful for the trust he placed in me.

“He told me in recent months not to worry, just to keep helping [Sevilla] and giving them my life.

“[Unai Emery] is one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever met in my life.

“He doesn’t leave anything in the air. When you’re unsure about something, Unai is there. He gave me everything, he knows me perfectly and I think I owe him much of my career.”
