Thiago Motta was assigned the Italy 10 shirt at Euro 2016 and “couldn’t turn it down,” said his agent.
Antonio Conte’s picks for the tournament sparked controversy, but none more so than handing the iconic Number 10 jersey to the PSG midfielder.
“He didn’t ask for the 10, it was assigned to him and he certainly couldn’t turn it down,” representative Dario Canovi told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“The number on the shirt doesn’t matter, as what counts is what you do on the pitch.”
Thiago Motta had been in doubt with a calf injury sustained towards the end of the regular season.
“It’s nothing serious, he just needed rest. People say Thiago is slow and they are right, he has never been quick, but he has other important qualities!
“There isn’t a single Coach who worked with Thiago and didn’t want him back. I know them all: Claudio Ranieri, Jose Mourinho, Rafa Benitez and Carlo Ancelotti always wanted him.
“He isn’t a showy player, but brings a lot of quality. Even Marco Verratti improved a great deal from playing alongside him.”
