Pantaleo Corvino was 'very sorry' to see a shortage of Italians in Fiorentina, but looks to Federico Bernardeschi as a 'treasure'.

The returning sporting director is set to reboot the Viola, even though he will be working with a more limited budget compared to some of his direct competitors.

“I spoke with the Coach and confirmed we must stay at the top. He must keep up the extraordinary work, but I must match it off the pitch.

“The budget isn't really a relevant topic. We need to keep the core of the team. Everything we'll do will be in accordance with the team's needs and the Financial Fair Play regulations.

“Our targets? We are all ambitious, myself included. We're still short of a few objectives, but we're working together to get there. I was looking for happiness but also adrenaline, and I think I found them here.”

The sporting director then went over the question of what the team lacked in the past, and what they were lacking now.

“In the past we came very close to some victories, like the Europa League, which we lost on penalties. We made the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia and only unexpected circumstances kept us from the Champions League quarter-finals.

“But I don't want to look at the past. It's time to put something in our own trophy cabinets. You also need a bit of luck, abroad Leicester City came first among other reasons because the top four teams all had trouble.

“My dream? It's the same as the club's, to come first in something. And I'd like to create a powerful youth team, as that pays us back.

“Creating a project in football is extremely difficult, believe me. We're looking for players who have the quality and who match Fiorentina's values, and who are also accessible financially.”

Corvino then discussed Federico Bernardeschi and the matter of making Fiorentina more Italian.

“Like all Italian clubs, we must now have four players from the youth teams and four Italians. I analysed Fiorentina right now and I was very sorry not to see many options to meet those requirements.

“Bernardeschi is an extraordinary resource that comes from our youth squad. He's a treasure for us and he'll continue here.

“The future? We need to achieve an objective as soon as possible, in one, two, three years. We'll work on the youth sector, yes, but the priority is to take the senior squad at the top.”
