Salvatore Sirigu was not surprised to start for Italy against Finland and “hopefully all this effort will pay off in Euro 2016.”

The goalkeeper had barely anything to do in the 2-0 friendly victory in Verona, but few expected him to feature.

“It is my job to be ready whenever I am called upon, so it was not an issue. I am part of the team like anyone else and the Coach didn’t specify any particular reason why I started tonight,” the PSG goalkeeper told Rai Sport.

“This is a preparation match and therefore he felt it opportune to let as many players as possible take to the field, I assume.

“I saw the team with much better fitness levels and tempo compared to last week’s friendly with Scotland, so we are working to be in the best shape for the competition.

“The defence works as a unit and that allows us to spark rapid counter-attacks and move the ball quickly.

“We are working very hard and hopefully all this effort will pay off in Euro 2016.”
