The Red Devils face Italy on Monday in their Euro 2016 Group E opener.
Defender Lombaerts had been bumped down from original member of the squad to alternate due to the inflammation of a tendon in his knee.
The situation did not improve and the Zenit star was sent home from the Bordeaux training base today.
In his place, Belgium called Genk defender Christain Kabasele.
