UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Russia after crowd disturbances during their 1-1 draw with England.

A statement confirmed the action would only be taken against Russia, as it was their supporters who charged through a barrier of stewards into the area with England fans at the final whistle.

The charges are crowd disturbances, racist behaviour and the setting off of fireworks.

UEFA’s Disciplinary Body will deal with the case on June 14.

It’s important to note that UEFA can only take action against a Federation for the behaviour of its fans at a match situation.

Therefore, no punishment is aimed at England, Russia or even France for the three days of rioting in Marseille’s Old Port district.

French reports suggest there are at least 31 injured in hospital after those city clashes, four in a serious condition.

“UEFA acknowledges that there were segregation issues at Stade Velodrome and will implement corrective measures to strengthen the deployment of security personnel at stadiums, in close collaboration with local authorities.

“UEFA expresses its utter disgust for the violent clashes that occurred in the city centre of Marseille, and its serious concern for the incidents at the end of the match inside Stade Velodrome.

“This kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable and has no place in football.”
