Approximately 200 supporters gathered in Place des Reignaux, where they began chanting and throwing bottles at the police. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports of violent clashes and the use of tear gas.

Police arrested eight English hooligans after the clashes. At least one person is reported to be wounded.

Prior to the game, the police had also detained seven Russians, four of which will be deported.

This did not go down well with the Russian authorities, and the Kremlin called in the French ambassador, demanding an explanation.

Russian sports minister Vitali Mutko spoke harshly about the way the events are being portrayed in the media, claiming it was not credible that 200 Russian fans had attacked 20,000 English fans.

UEFA released a statement today, lamenting the events in Lille.

“UEFA regrets the skirmishes which occurred in Lille last night,” reads the statement. “Police forces made several arrests and were quick to restore order and keep the situation under control."
