President Aurelio De Laurentiis threatened to sue Koulibaly for damages after comments in L’Equipe suggesting a move away from Napoli was likely.

The patron claimed he’d have to pay for the sponsors who pulled out of deals because Koulibaly had ‘ruined his image’ with these statements.

“What we need now is calm, because the President over-reacted to what the player said,” agent Bruno Satin told Sky Sport Italia.

“Koulibaly only said that he’d been waiting for six months to talk to the club for a renewal. The lad expressed his desire, but I don’t understand why De Laurentiis was so infuriated.

“I can understand that perhaps there was no need to make certain comments, but Kalidou is doing far better than anyone expected.

“We know the player has another three years on his contract, but the lad expressed a simple desire and the club is aware of that.

“Is he looking for a pay rise? I cannot say that, as certain things must remain confidential. He wanted recognition for the excellent campaign, but there are also many offers from important clubs with much higher wages.

“There is a time for everything and when a player does well, a club should be quick in recognising where credit is due. Napoli did not do that.

“We are not the only ones who run the market, as it’s only natural that clubs see a young player of talent who is doing well and are interested.

“Even though three years on his contract make it difficult, there is no such thing as an unsellable player. It all depends on the price.”
