Matteo Darmian explains how Italy “plugged our ears and kept working” amid criticism ahead of Euro 2016.

The Nazionale have already qualified top of Group E and will play the Round of 16 tie in Paris on June 27.

Darmian was lambasted for sparking a dangerous counter-attack in the 2-0 win over Belgium and dropped from the starting XI with Sweden.

“To err is human, but there is always a teammate to cover your back, just as on other occasions I was the one covering them,” the Manchester United full-back told news agency Ansa.

“As a team, we know that we don’t have quite as much quality as some other sides, so we have to make up for it with other characteristics, like determination and team spirit.

“However, we were criticised in an exaggerated fashion. How did we react? We plugged our ears and continued working with intensity, as Antonio Conte asked us to.”
