Torino will play a friendly against Benfica in July, in memory of Il Grande Torino.

The great Granata side which won five Scudetti in a row – interrupted by World War II – were all killed when their plane crashed in the hills above Turin in May of 1949.

The Toro side were returning from a friendly against Benfica in Portugal when fog caused the pilot, Pierluigi Meroni, to crash into a wall behind the basilica at Superga.

“Benfica and Torino FC are pleased to announce that a friendly match will take place in Lisbon on Wednesday July 27 in memory of Il Grande Torino, as part of the ninth edition of the Eusebio Cup,” a statement on Torino’s website announced.

The Granata’s stadium was renamed as Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino earlier this season.
