Berti Vogts insists Italy “were Germany’s nemesis five, 10 or 20 years ago, but those days are over.”

The Euro 2016 quarter-final kicks off in Bordeaux at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT) and Germany have still never beaten the Azzurri in a major tournament.

“Italy were Germany’s nemesis five, 10 or 20 years ago, but those days are over,” former Coach Vogts told Rheinische Post.

“We always drew the short straw against the Azzurri, starting with the match of the century in 1970, then in 1982, 2006 and 2012.

“In the past Serie A was the best League in the world and the best German players were there. In 1996, I had nine players in the squad who worked in Italy.

“But today? The Bundesliga and English Premier League are the ultimate destinations, followed by the Spanish Liga. Italian football has fallen significantly.

“This is about the here and now, so things have definitely changed. This is why the only favourite in my view is Germany, even though at this level every game is decided by details.”
