The Juventus midfielder was an emergency pick for the Euro 2016 quarter-final because Daniele De Rossi and Antonio Candreva were injured with Thiago Motta suspended.

“I sprained my knee in the first half, but I did what was necessary, because we couldn’t think about tomorrow,” Sturaro told Sky Sport Italia.

The Azzurri went to extra time and only lost in a sudden death penalty shoot-out.

“The regret is that we were unable to qualify for the next round. We have nothing to regret, as we leave with our heads held high, although naturally there is huge disappointment.

“We are not happy, because we played on a par with the World Cup winners for 120 minutes.”
