Vicente Del Bosque has officially stepped down as Spain's Coach, closing an era for Italy's most recent rival.

La Roja lost 2-0 to the Azzurri in Euro 2016, after eight years of unbroken domination that included a crushing 4-0 defeat in the final of Euro 2016.

The game was followed by speculation within the Spanish media that this spelled the end of an era for the Seleccion, who have now put in a second disappointing tournament after the 2014 World Cup.

Del Bosque, who was at the helm of the team since 2008, has resigned as a Coach but will still be involved with the Spanish Federation.

“The President of the RFEF, Angel Maria Villar and the national Coach Vicente del Bosque, held today, on July 4, a meeting in Madrid,” reads an official statement on the site of the Spanish federation.

“The Coach expressed to the president his decision not to continue in the lead of the national team.

“Angel Maria Villar, who considers Vicente del Bosque 'a treasure of Spanish football', gave him the option of continuing his work within the federation. The offer was taken up, and will take a concrete form in the next few weeks.”
