The Doria are emerging from a horrible season, which even the president's energy could not keep from spiralling downwards.

After having sent the Aeroplanino to Milan and signed the latter's former target Giampaolo, Ferrero believes it's time to make a switch.

“Giampaolo impressed me,” the Doria head told SampNews24.com. “He told me he'll give the team a game, and I'm a man who likes football, not the ball. So I told him, Sampdoria is yours.

“With Giampaolo we'll certainly go to the left side of the standings. I think we'll play an excellent championship, as we have a good team.

“I'd like to remind you that the great [Napoli Coach Maurizio] Sarri used to be schooled by Giampaolo. He went to watch him play.

“I met Sarri in Florence, at my place, and I loved the guy. But others had advised against signing him and I gave up on the idea.”

Now Sampdoria have released Montella, who'd come to the club with similar promises as those of Giampaolo.

“I love Vincenzo very much, I did everything I could to bring him to Samp. The move was his own spontaneous decision. This club may be a bit too small for him.

“Sampdoria have a wonderful fandom and are a historic team that generated many champions. He had the option to go to Milan. He said he was their fan when he was a child, so best of luck to him.

“I allowed my cooperators to decide everything and I found myself with [Walter] Zenga," the president said sarcastically, as he never got along well with the former goalkeeper. "Now he works as a commentator, which is fitting – that's what he does best. He should get a really big contract because he's good, he's creative.”

Ferrero then discussed the transfer market, starting from Roberto Soriano, who is once again being targeted by the bigger clubs.

“He can go where his heart leads him. He was about to go to Inter in January. He's good, as a man and as a footballer. There are some moments when a guy has to fly.

“Cassano is a great talent but I don't think he'll be part of our project. I gave him an opportunity and things went the way they did. Now that opportunity is gone.

“[Leandro] Castan? Possible, as is [Leandro] Paredes. [Mario] Balotelli is a great player and a great talent, but Balotelli's greatest enemy is Balotelli, just like Cassano.

“They're players who are stuck in the 60s. He could start again from passionate teams like Sampdoria, but by now he's a bit confused. I did try to lure him, he's a great talent.”
