Juan Manuel Iturbe came off the bench and almost immediately fired well wide in a promising counter-attack, but Terek Grozny equalised after Emerson Palmieri was dispossessed in the final third, allowing a Gheorghe Grozav angled drive.

It didn’t last long, as moments later Francesco Totti’s delightful first-time assist over the defence from midfield sent Edin Dzeko clear for a cool finish.

That was only a taster, as Totti – who turns 40 in September – sprayed remarkably accurate passes from the centre circle for Iturbe and Emerson Palmieri.

Iturbe’s strike was well parried and Moustapha Seck needed practically a goal-line clearance after Lobont was caught out.

Terek Grozny did get their equaliser, as Lobont was surprised by a well-taken Grozav free kick into the near top corner.

Ezequiel Ponce missed a sitter, but made up for it when his header bounced off the upright and 18-year-old Riccardo Marchizza tapped in the rebound.

Iturbe thought he’d made it 4-2 in stoppages, but was denied by a splendid one-handed save.
