The club was shaken this week when director of sport Foschi tended his resignation, officially due to ill health, though many believe it’s due to tension with Zamparini over transfer strategy.

“I had asked him for seven reinforcements, yet he proposed three Atalanta cast-offs,” Zamparini told La Repubblica.

“I gave him some homework to do, even if it wasn’t that easy: find two defenders, three midfielders, an attacking winger and a striker.

“He wanted to bring me Mauricio Pinilla, Marco Borriello and Luca Cigarini. If Atalanta were fighting with us last season to avoid relegation and want to give these players away, there has to be a reason.”

Nonetheless, the undiplomatic Zamparini did wish Foschi the best.

“He knew that he was unwell, but I did not. I just remember Foschi from six years ago, when we’d argue every week. I am disconcerted now, he just couldn’t do it both psychologically and physically.

“I think over the next week we should have new players arriving. Robin Quaison is on the way out, so if anyone asks for him, he can go. Atalanta requested him, but I don’t even care what they’re offering.

“The fans shouldn’t worry, we’re bringing in all internationals, not even half an Italian.”

Palermo have chosen their new director of sport, hiring Trapani’s Daniele Faggiano.
