Former president Massimo Moratti believes Inter are 'worth second place, but Coach Roberto Mancini needs support'.

The Nerazzurri did well to retain Mauro Icardi against Napoli's pressure so far, and with Roma currently stagnant on the market, they are strong candidates to qualify for the Champions League in 2017-18.

“Today it can be said that if the signing of Gabigol is confirmed, alongside that of [Antonio] Candreva, then Inter would be the second power of the championship, at least on paper” said Moratti, in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport “. Although the title appears to have already been won by Juventus.

“But it's all going to depend on the environment that can be created within the changing room. Or else, signing new players to add to those we already have is going to be useless.

“Obviously I'm referring to the Mancini saga. I was never too soft on changing Coaches when necessary, but even I never thought of revolutionising the bench 20 days from the beginning of the league.

“So there has to be great clarity, and some final decisions must be taken. I don't know what his requests were, but if the club chooses to go on with Mancini, then he needs adequate support. There can be no alibis for anyone. Everyone has to move forwards in the same direction.”

Moratti was then asked if the turbulence with regards to the Coach might already be affecting the team, and if they had any chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

“It's hard to say from the outside, but usually a changing room can perceive certain things. On a subconscious level, they might not work as well if they feel that their leader is not fully legitimated.

“And I'll say again that Inter have the potential to reach second place. But it all has to be confirmed on the pitch, making the players work well with each other.

“Also, we must not forget that there's still almost a month to go until the end of the market, and that Napoli and Roma will make some important signings to replace [Gonzalo] Higuain and [Miralem] Pjanic.”
