Edin Dzeko described his great chance as Roma drew 1-1 with Porto. “It was unlucky, as I did everything ok.”

The Giallorossi were pegged back at the Estadio do Dragao in the first leg of the Champions League play-off, but were down to 10 men for an hour.

“I think the first 30 minutes we played a very good game and could’ve scored more goals, then after the red card we suffered, but held out for the draw,” the striker told Mediaset Premium.

Dzeko had a great chance in the first half denied by an Alex Telles goal-line clearance, but did he think about going down for the penalty?

“No, I first of all didn’t expect Casillas to let the ball go. In the end I just tried to score a goal and was unlucky that Telles was there on the line to save. It was unlucky, I think, as I did everything ok.”

Thomas Vermaelen was sent off just 41 minutes into his competitive debut for Roma.

“This is football, it can happen to anyone. We got the red card, which made it more difficult for us, but I have nothing to say about Vermaelen. He was unlucky to get the red card, we showed character and held out as a team.”

Dzeko hit the headlines with some huge misses last term, so was asked how he put that lack of confidence behind him.

“I don’t even remember last year,” he smiled. “This is the new season, I want to look forward and will do everything to help my team win. Hopefully that includes me scoring goals, but today’s game was a good beginning.

“We have to win the second leg.”
