There were unexpected scenes on Friday night when rumours spread that the Uruguayan was staying at the Hotel Vesuvio as a guest of the club, so dozens of fans waited outside at 3am.

His agent later confirmed he was still in Paris, but was touched by the “affection” shown by ultras.

Now both the Corriere dello Sport and La Repubblica claim it was only a dry run, because Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has called Cavani to ask for his return.

The patron has been under fire by fans after failing to sign a replacement for Gonzalo Higuain, despite pocketing €90m.

The Italian papers claim Cavani is open to the move, but that Paris Saint-Germain will take some real convincing.

Cavani joined Napoli from Palermo in July 2010 for €17m and was sold to PSG three years later for €64m.

It’s reported his two sons still live in Naples and the transfer would also allow him to be closer to them.
