Paulo Dybala revealed what it was like to play with Leo Messi and be consoled by him after a red card on his full Argentina debut.

The Juventus striker’s club form earned him a place in the starting XI for a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, but he was sent off for two bookable offences and left the pitch in tears.

“I had never played with Messi before. It was my dream and I was able to achieve it,” Dybala told Argentine newspaper Olè.

“When I was sent off, he consoled me too. Leo told me to stay calm, that these things happen and it wasn’t my fault, but that of the referee.

“I was really upset, it was a horrible moment, because that was a special day for me and it didn’t go the way I expected. I might’ve been anxious or played badly, but to get sent off? Never. Besides, my first yellow card was very harsh.

“I felt at ease with Messi and we talked about how we were going to be set out. If he went central, I was to move out wide. I had fun, at least as long as I was on the pitch, and I tried to help him because he’s the leader of this team.

“When Messi retired from international duty after the Copa America, I thought I’d never get the chance to play alongside him. But the day of the game I realised he feels the responsibility of wearing this shirt more than anyone.”

Dybala is a huge fan of the Barcelona legend, but admits he’s still intimidated by him.

“If I were to face him in the Champions League, I’d ask for his jersey, but I can’t do that with the Seleccion – he’s my teammate!”
