“We can fight it out with anyone and, after two very complicated rounds, it is only right to talk about Samp being top of the table,” Ferrero told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper.

“I am happy to face the big clubs early on. Whoever is best prepared for the game will win. I made a courageous choice picking Marco Giampaolo, but he is a great professional.”

Ferrero did not have kind words for Roma chief James Pallotta, who flew in from Boston this morning.

“I don’t have the same rapport with Pallotta that I do with Claudio Lotito. The latter has only one defect – he says he’s a Lazio fan, but it’s not true,” grinned Roma supporter Ferrero.

“It makes my heart weep to see Inter and Milan owned by Chinese conglomerates. These gentlemen swoop in from abroad and buy everything, so a piece of Italy is lost. Inter and Milan to China, Roma owned by Americans. It makes me cry.”

Ferrero added another chapter in his ugly spat with Cassano, the player now frozen out of the squad.

“It’s part of the past now. He did not behave well with me. He says he’s a man of the streets, someone for whom his word counts for something. He betrayed me.

“He went to (director) Romei 100 times, was aggressive and vulgar, so then we could’ve exercised the clause in his contract to terminate it.

“He told me that, without Vincenzo Montella on the bench, he’d leave. I believed in the man and he betrayed me. He should remember giving his word.

“As for Montella, I learned to end rapports well. Coaches are like wives and Montella had become more of a mistress. You have to part ways on good terms, otherwise there will be trouble.”
