Luciano Spalletti warned Roma “need to show more hunger and intensity” after a 1-1 Europa League draw away to Viktoria Plzen.

The Giallorossi had taken a very early lead through Diego Perotti’s penalty, but a double defensive error allowed the equaliser soon after.

“We can and must do more and better,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We had also gone in front and could’ve taken control of the game, because we had that opportunity, but instead it turned into a more physical match and that gave them the advantage.

“We conceded a goal that was absolutely avoidable. If you don’t take control of a situation in these arenas, then the opposition will play heart and soul. We must be more relaxed and show greater character. We must do more.”

There were reports before kick-off that Juan Manuel Iturbe was given an ultimatum to deliver tonight or not play again.

“There’s no ultimatum. In my view we’re on to the next test. I thought we could hold the ball more in the middle and controlled that area of the park. If we’d had more courage, calm and desire, we could’ve controlled some pretty easy situations.

“We allowed Plzen to get to the ball first in some situations and when losing possession we didn’t fight hard enough to get it back straight away. We need to find a solution to this psychological laziness.”

Brazilian midfielder Gerson was a surprise starter and was replaced at half-time.

“All considered he had a decent game, though he’s excused to a degree because it was his first. In general those who don’t play much need to make the most of these opportunities.

“You don’t get five games to prove yourself in today’s football. You get five minutes and five training sessions. Those who don’t play as much need to show more hunger and intensity.”
