The possibility of referees speaking to the Press after games returned to the fore over the weekend as Genoa President Enrico Preziosi slammed the “crazy” performance of Massimiliano Irrati in his club’s 1-1 draw with Pescara on Sunday.

Nicchi, who was re-elected the chief of Italian referees a day before, refused Radio Rai’s questions about how the official fared at Marassi but noted on a potential relationship with the media: “It’s a project I’ve been working on for some time.

“We’re making small steps. If we can talk about everything peacefully, it means that we’ve grown, not only on the pitch but also politically.

“With the mentality that reigns in today’s football, if we opened up to this eventuality, we’d only ever speak about the ‘recognition of an error’ on the referee’s part.

“No-one would say ‘how good were you to see the offside?’”
