Luciano Spalletti sees the 2-1 win over Inter as a turning point for Roma’s season and a much-needed morale-booster for Edin Dzeko.

It was a thrilling encounter at the Stadio Olimpico, decided by an early Dzeko tap-in and deflected Kostas Manolas header around the temporary Ever Banega equaliser.

“It’s a wonderful victory that sorts out many things,” the Giallorossi Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“There was too much talk and the team hadn’t done very well this season. We were very inconsistent, but this win allows us to work with depth and the time we need for a more detailed analysis of the situation.

“Every now and then there are moments when it doesn’t go the way it should and we as professionals should give a specific direction to the team. At times we’re content to defend, at others the opposition make us run hard and that creates fatigue.

“Manolas has incredible potential. His physicality is extraordinary and he just needs to find the right consistency to make the most of these characteristics.”

Dzeko has often been criticised, but this evening received a standing ovation from the Olimpico crowd.

“From the start of the season I said we needed Dzeko. A centre-forward with that physique gives the team different attacking options. Besides, Edin also has the quality to play the ball quickly and to feet, though at times he lacks the necessary determination.

“Edin is sensitive and a guy who needs to feel support. When he left the field, the Curva Sud was praising him to the rafters. He knows what I expect from him: more ferocity. We were all happy, as we won a game against a very strong team.”

The scoreline could’ve been comfortably more had Mohamed Salah found finishing to match his pace.

“Salah would belong in English football, as he has this sprint over 60 metres that leaves you standing. He isn’t very strong defensively, so it becomes tricky for the team to make up for that, especially against a side like Inter.”

Alessandro Florenzi played in a new role, as a trequartista in the 4-2-3-1 system.

“Florenzi is talented wherever you put him, as he can attack and defend. He is an extremely reliable player.”

Roma climbed up to 13 points, five adrift of Juventus and one behind Napoli, in joint third place with Lazio, Milan and Chievo.

“Our target is to win every game and see where we are.”
