Rui Costa and Zambrotta were speaking in aid of the Match for Peace, which takes place at the Olimpico on Wednesday, and the former Milan pair reflected on the situation facing the Rossoneri, namely Berlusconi’s impending sale and Maldini’s refusal to return in a non-playing capacity.

“It seems strange to imagine the Rossoneri without Berlusconi, but the shirt remains the same and the fans too. I hope they go back to their past soon,” Rui Costa was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Maldini? I’m very sorry not to see a person like him at the club.

“He’s one of the icons in Milan’s history, but he has a personality and vision of football that would make him a great leader.

Zambrotta added: “Maldini? He could make a contribution, I’d already realised that he’d say ‘no’, but he’s someone that can give so much to Italian football, behind a desk.

“It’s another shame not to see Presidents like Berlusconi and Moratti in the game anymore.”
