Gianluigi Buffon’s agent says the Italy and Juventus captain could “surprise us” by playing on after 2018.
The goalkeeper has previously stated that he’ll hang up his gloves after the World Cup in Russia, meaning that this would be his penultimate season.
However, his representative says the veteran could play on after his previously stated retirement date.
“The goal is obviously to continue up to the 2018 World Cup, then we’ll see,” Silvano Martina told Tuttomercatoweb.
“Gigi is such a great player who could still surprise us. Life and football are unpredictable, so I’d say you can never say never to after the World Cup.
“We don’t know what will happen.
“Once he retires? He’s a truly unique professional, he wouldn’t have problems in any new role. He really can do it all.”
Despite being one of the best goalkeepers in the world for the past 20 years, Buffon has come in for some criticism for his performances against Spain and Macedonia over the international break.
“We’re talking about the best ever, and a very intelligent person. I saw some exaggerated criticism immediately after the goal against Spain.
“Even the number one can make mistakes.”
