Juventus executives thought Massimiliano Allegri 'was joking' when he said he wanted a bonus for a Champions League win.

The 49-year-old replaced Antonio Conte at the Turin-based club, and has explained that there was much work to be done upon his arrival.

"The situation was difficult," Allegri told Corriere dello Sport. "The team changed coaches just a week into pre-season."

“But I arrived with a clear head. I was calm, I knew I had a great team. When I signed the first contract for Juventus I asked for there to be a bonus added for winning the Champions League.

“They thought I was joking. But we reached the final and almost won…

“After two years the squad has undergone heavy changes. It certainly can not be said that it is the Juventus of Conte anymore .."

The Bianconeri boss then went on to talk about the quality of his current squad before they take on Udinese on Saturday evening, having already declared that they are favourites to win the Scudetto this season.

“Juve are a great team, we must improve the quality of the play but we are growing.

“We changed sixteen players in two years, including champions like Pirlo, Vidal and Pogba in midfield, but it does not scare me to rebuild: it's tiring but exciting.

“The club has provided me with six new and great players. Just like I did with Dybala, I will try to integrate them into the team in the right way."
