Chievo boss Rolando Maran has spoken to reporters about the 'Chievo fairytale,' not ruling out an European finish this season.

The Flying Donkeys have enjoyed a flying start to the campaign and sit fifth in Serie A with 13 points.

"It is very great to be up at the top and we are in good company there," Maran told Sky Sport Italia. "We are up there with a lot of great teams who are very good technically.

“We are the intruders but we want to stay there. I think Chievo are the biggest surprise of the season.

“We are the intruders but we want to stay there. I think Chievo are the biggest surprise of the season.

“Europe? The President will never say certain things, even if he thinks them. A European place makes us all dream and we are continuing to write new pages of the Chievo fairy tale.”

Speaking about last summer, when Maran and Chievo almost parted company, the Coach explained that he was glad to have stayed put.

"It was great to have been able to continue together, but there had to be the right circumstances. The thing that I could not bear was to not continue to do well with the club that represents my life in football.”

Having joined the club as a player in 1986, Maran spoke of his relationship with President Luca Campedelli and discussed Vincenzo Montella – who he will face on Sunday when Chievo take on Milan – and Bayern Munich’s Carlo Ancelotti as colleagues who he admires.

“I have known him since the first day he started his job. The decision to remain was a well-considered choice and I’m glad we finally decided to continue together.

"Chievo are the best they have ever been, but part of taking on the job means accepting new challenges: we are right to believe in our own ability.

"A person who does not know me but whom I respect a lot is Carlo Ancelotti: he has won everywhere and he speaks with a disarming simplicity. This is a great talent.

“Vincenzo makes his teams run a lot because they have so much possession of the ball. In a short time Montella has given an identity to Milan and for me he is one of the most well prepared Coaches in Italy. On Sunday I'll wish him luck, but only at the end of the game."
