The Giallorossi were feeling confident after beating Napoli to go joint second in Serie A and were top of this group alongside Austria Vienna with four points from two rounds. Francesco Totti reached a landmark with his 100th UEFA club competition appearance, but Daniele De Rossi was suspended with Diego Perotti, Bruno Peres, Mario Rui, Thomas Vermaelen and Antonio Rudiger injured. The visitors had Lukas Rotpuller sitting out a ban in defence.

Alessandro Florenzi’s early strike was palmed over the bar, but Roma went behind when a Juan Jesus defensive error sparked the move and Holzhauser kept his excellent volley low into the far bottom corner.

The equaliser wasn’t far away, though, as Gerson chipped a ball over the defence and Stephan El Shaarawy kept his cool to flick it over the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Play was halted for several minutes when Almer came rushing out and badly sprained his knee during a clearance, with what looked to be ligament damage. He was stretchered off in tears.

The third goal was classic Roma, as Totti’s first time long pass sent El Shaarawy running down the left and he stroked a right-foot finish into the far top corner.

The Little Pharaoh went for a hat-trick, but this time it was easy for the ‘keeper, then set up Radja Nainggolan only for Holzhauser to rush back for the decisive block.

Alisson had his gloves stung at the near post by the lively Venuto. After the restart, Nainggolan again went close, his deflected shot on to the side-netting.

Totti created the third goal for Alessandro Florenzi, a splendid swerving cross with the outside of the boot that his teammate volleyed in at the back post.

A divine Totti dummy allowed a pass through for Salah to score, but the offside flag was raised in an extremely tight decision.

Roma seemed to settle into their 3-1 lead and that was a huge mistake. Austria Vienna got back into it with Kayode’s dummy unsighting Alisson for substitute Prokop to drill home.

Moments later, the defence was caught napping by a cross to the near post, where Kayode snuck in undisturbed for the tap-in and 3-3.

Substitute Edin Dzeko had his solo effort charged down in the box, then had the ball in the net only after being flagged offside.
